The story
The last of the analog 3s.
The E46 was the best-selling 3 Series of its time and a high point for BMW build quality and design. It’s modern enough to use every day, with steering feel and balance that later cars traded away.
The 330i and its ZHP performance package were great all-rounders. But the M3 is the star: the S54 straight six revs past 8,000 rpm, and with a six-speed manual it’s one of the great driver’s cars.
The Euro-only CSL took that further with a carbon roof and lighter weight. Values for good E46 M3s have risen sharply, but non-M cars are still a bargain.

Buyer's guide
What to check before you buy
Chassis
Have the rear subframe mounting points inspected for cracks, and check whether they've been reinforced.
M3 engine
Ask for rod-bearing replacement records, check the VANOS, and listen for rattle on startup.
Cooling
Water pump, radiator, expansion tank and thermostat. On non-M cars, check the oil filter housing gasket.
Gearbox
On SMG cars, check the hydraulic pump and shift quality. Manual cars are more desirable.

Where values sit
Non-M E46s are cheap, around $10k, with the ZHP in the mid-teens. Good M3s sell in the $30–40k range, with manual coupes and ZCP cars at the top, and the CSL is a six-figure car.

The verdict
Buy a manual M3 coupe with rod-bearing and subframe records, and keep it. For a cheaper daily, the ZHP is the hidden gem.
